The ‘One-Stop Career Shop’

The ‘One-Stop Career Shop’

So many people think of a staffing agency as a place to find temporary work, but that’s only a small part of what Friday Services does.

Why?

Because we’re not here to just find warm bodies to fill open positions.

We’re in the people business. We help people find work, with people and the type of careers they want and have the skills to work.

How do we do it? We take the time with each job-seeker to understand all of their job skills, experience, needs and interests.

It’s an approach that flips the script on the stigma that all staffing agencies do is place a warm body in temp jobs, with limited career potential. While that may be true of others, Friday Services prides itself on being a “one-stop career shop” for employers and job-seekers alike. We even changed our name from Friday Staffing to Friday Services to better reflect all that we do.

Setting the record straight

Some of the common misconceptions people have about temporary staffing agencies include:

  • They ONLY place entry-level or unskilled workers.
  • The jobs don’t lead people to long-term or permanent jobs.
  • They charge job-seekers for their services.

At Friday Services, these misconceptions are all FALSE.

Our company is a resource for making the connection between employers looking to hire, with job-seekers who want to be placed in a career – whether they are at the entry level, or have many years of job experience under their belt. Most of the time with good work performance and attendance these employees are hired on directly by the company. Friday Services is career-oriented, going beyond a typical staffing agency to find the right fit for the company and the potential employee. And we never charge job-seekers for helping them land a new job; rather, employers pay US to find them good employees.

Just as focused on the long term

While yes, we can help job-seekers find temporary work, so many employers here in Western North Carolina are looking to the long term, and we specialize in placement opportunities for all levels of experience in a broad range of roles and industries.

Some of those industries include:

  • Technical Staffing
  • Professional Recruiting Services – These roles are hired from day one by the employer.
  • Light Industrial Labor and Skilled Workforce Solutions
  • Clerical and Administrative Staffing Resources

As a professional employment agency, we are able to connect employers with highly skilled job-seekers who are ready and excited to work, and who bring a diversity of experience and talent to their teams.

Programs designed to launch careers

Friday Services is the first employment agency in the region and only 2nd in the state to offer an apprenticeship program that allows apprentice workers the opportunity to get paid while they learn a new career hands-on.

Through a partnership with Blue Ridge Community College and area manufacturers, we are able to offer apprenticeships to area workers who receive valuable education while working on the job. Starting pay is $15 an hour, which increases over the time worked. The cost of tuition and books are covered by the program as well.

At the end of the program, the apprentice worker earns a Mechatronics Engineering Technology Certification as an Industrial Manufacturing Production Technician, and gains a foothold on a high-tech career. Learn more here:

Additionally, Friday Services recognizes that veterans are some of the most highly skilled, hardworking employees. Because of this, we offer a wealth of resources to assist area veterans in finding a better job, such as:

  • Free Resume Help
  • Career Counseling
  • Job Placement for Veterans

We encourage any veteran who is currently seeking employment to stop by our office or apply for a job with Friday Services.

It all starts here

Whether you are a local employer looking for just the right person to join your team, or you’re a worker looking for that next step – or that first step – in your career, Friday Services is here to help you.

While the majority of our jobs are full time jobs that often start as temporary but go to permanent, we work with several employers who are looking to immediately fill positions directly on their team through our professional placement services.

Our premium recruitment program is a fee-based placement service that employers typically use to fill management or highly-skilled positions. Unlike temporary work, the employee is never on Friday Services’ payroll. Instead, the employee works with us to become a direct hire for a desired company from the start.

Other clients hire us to create custom recruitment packages, tailoring our services to their company’s recruiting needs.

Many area job seekers start their journey with our job board. There, job candidates seeking employment in technical, industrial, clerical/administrative and skilled labor, management and other fields, all thanks to our longtime partnerships with local employers. There are hundreds of listings for jobs, from Hendersonville to Morganton, and from Asheville to Black Mountain – all over Western North Carolina.

Job Searching Tips During COVID-19

While many workers have been laid off or furloughed due to the pandemic, the good news is that more recently, there has been a hiring surge – a demand for qualified workers and a workforce shortage. If you’re currently in the market for a new job, start by addressing these questions:

  • Have you updated your online profile and resumé?
  • Are you researching companies that are currently hiring?
  • Are the positions you’re applying for a good match for your experience, education and skill set?
  • Does your resume demonstrate that you’re a great candidate based on the qualifications listed in the job posting?
  • Have you tailored your cover letter to express specific interest in the hiring company? And does it specifically expound on the value you’d add to the open position?

Now is the time to take a thoughtful look at what you have learned and accomplished since the last time you updated this information. Friday Services offers a clear overview of proven steps for finding a new and exciting next chapter in your professional life.

Be Open to Similar Jobs

We still live in a hiring environment where employment initiatives and timelines are constantly shifting and adjusting. Now is a good time to consider applying to jobs that match your skills, experience and qualifications, but may not exactly match your intended career track. Be willing to explore job opportunities that may leverage your education and skill set but may not have been your first choice. These positions may offer new experiences and help you acquire new skills that may, in turn, transfer into qualifications that can open doors for you down the road.

Temporary positions can be a smart way to boost your skill set and experience on your resume – demonstrating to potential employers that you’ve got the chops, as a candidate, to take on their assignments. Taking on a temporary placement demonstrates that you are employable. They’re a great way for unemployed workers to get back to work and gain valuable experience and career-building skills and contacts.

It’s not unusual for companies to hire temporary staff to fill in for the holiday season, to cover for full-time employees’ family leave, maternity leave or vacations. Temporary jobs (temp jobs) offer you a short-term job with an employer – to fill in during periods of high customer demand or forecasted need.

Staffing Options (temp to hire, short term, indefinite)

Staffing Options (temp to hire, short term, indefinite)

Temp to Hire Jobs

Temp-to-hire employment comes with the potential of being brought into the company as a full-time employee. A temp-to-hire arrangement allows both employer and employee to try out a position with the option to hire the employee full-time – depending upon how effectively and efficiently the employee fills the temp-to-hire position.

Accepting a temp-to-hire placement demonstrates that you are employable. No matter what stage in your work life you are – temp-to-hire placements allow you to explore new career fields, jump on the fast track to a new job with free education and hands-on experience. Many placements offer the opportunity to learn new technical skills, participate in new workflow processes and become accomplished on new software platforms or programs.

As a temp-to-hire employee, there’s no guarantee a temporary role will translate into a permanent position. However, there are a number of distinct advantages to making accepting professional placements:

  • The chance to “try out” a new position
  • Important networking connections
  • Opportunities to gain valuable job references

Typically, temp-to-hire workers who are hired directly through a company have little to no employee benefits. But when you are placed through an employment agency, like Friday Services, temp-to-hire workers have access to more benefits available to them.

Short-Term Jobs

Short-term, or fixed term, temp positions may only last a few days, or up to a couple of weeks. Some businesses might need extra or specialized help on a specific project. And a number of industries offer these opportunities because they need seasonal support during times of high traffic or productivity. This type of work is especially helpful when workers find themselves between jobs – they need a paycheck and employment to cover gaps in their resume.

Long-Term Opportunities

When the position continues longer than about six weeks, it’s usually considered long term placement. Some positions might extend for a year or more. However, there are state laws, government agency regulations that set limitations on the length of long-term temp positions. The company seeking staffing assistance signs a contract with the employment agency – either for a certain number of temp hours or for a specific length of time. The contract can always be renegotiated and extended.

Employment Agency

Employers typically seek the help of temporary professionals because they are at capacity, under-staffed, and already overburdened. Or they may simply have an unexpected, urgent job vacancy that needs to be filled.

A professional placement firm, like Friday Services, offers the advantage of temporary professionals who are:

  • Pre-qualified
  • Pre-screened
  • From a trusted source

The added benefit of working with an employment agency, like Friday Services, is that you don’t pay any fees because they are covered by companies seeking qualified job candidates. These firms are also prepared to support you with resume writing, preparation for an interview, how to dress, and how to build your professional skills.

Friday Services even offers an industry-leading apprenticeship program, aimed at helping job candidates start or restart their career. That means no matter what stage in your work life you are – jump on the fast track to a new career with free education and hands-on experience.

Is a Temp Job Right for You?

Is a Temp Job Right for You?

What is a Temp Job?

It’s not unusual for companies to hire temporary staff to fill in for the holiday season, to cover for full-time employees’ family leave, maternity leave or vacations. Temporary jobs (temp jobs) offer you a short-term job with an employer – to fill in during periods of high customer demand or forecasted need. They’re a great way for unemployed workers to get back to work and gain valuable experience and career-building skills and contacts.

Temporary positions typically involve a short-term contract, and they usually don’t offer benefits, unless the temp employee has been working with the staffing firm for an extended period of time.

What is a Temp Agency?

Temp agencies are recruiting firms that help businesses staff up when they are anticipating shortages in manpower, or when they are forecasting a need for additional support. Temp agencies help companies recruit staff and they help workers find immediate placements. Many companies have found that working with a recruiting agency is the most cost-effective strategy. A temp agency also has the expertise and tools to help workers find an ideal position – whether it’s temporary placement, temp-to-hire, seasonal hiring, or a full-time position.

Benefits of a Temp Job

With a recruiter’s professional experience, you can improve access to the quantity and the quality of available positions. Taking on a temporary placement demonstrates that you are employable. And job seekers who sign with a temporary agency, like Friday Services, don’t pay any fees to work with a temp agency because they are covered by companies seeking the support of temporary staff. Professional staffing agencies can assist you with resume writing, preparation for an interview, how to dress, and how to build your professional skills.

No doubt, temp work is a smart way to boost your skill set and experience on your resume – demonstrating to potential employers that you’ve got the chops, as a candidate, to take on their assignments. In fact, there are distinct advantages to making accepting professional placements:

  • The chance to “try out” a new position
  • The flexibility to explore new careers, or change careers
  • Important networking connections
  • Opportunities to gain valuable job references
  • The flexibility to travel

No matter what stage in your work life you are – temporary professional placements allow you to explore new career fields, jump on the fast track to a new job with free education and hands-on experience. Firms like Friday Services have a network in place to help match you to the type of positions you’re most interested in, and the kind of positions that can work to further your career.

Temp vs Part-Time Workers

Part-time work differs from temp work in that part-time positions offer a limited schedule of hours for a non-defined, or open-ended period of time – meaning there’s no end date. Temp jobs can actually involve full-time work, but terms are defined by a contract – so, there’s a defined start date and end date.

A temporary professional placement may offer you the chance to learn new technical skills, participate in new workflow processes and become accomplished on new software platforms or programs. Temp firms like Friday Services offer advantages like Skills Improvement Training – potentially qualifying you for a higher paying position. You’ll find free, self-guided computer software training is available at all of Friday’s locations by appointment:

  • Keyboarding
  • Windows
  • Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint

Other benefits can include Holiday Pay after 1200 work hours within the latest 12 months and one week of Vacation Pay after at least one year of service and at least 1500 hours within the latest 12 months. And two weeks of vacation pay after at least two years of service, and at least 1500 working hours the first year of service, and at least 1800 hours within the current 12 months.

If you work regularly for Friday Services, you are also eligible for an affordable insurance plan. And you are able to increase your coverage or add your immediate family members for an additional amount. You may add Dental or Vision coverage for yourself and your family for an additional fee. Premiums can be automatically deducted from your pay.

Temp-to-Hire

Temp-to-Hire placements offer a win/win proposition. This approach allows companies to hire staff on a temporary basis in order to evaluate them for a long-term job placement. Likewise, it gives temp workers active experience in a career field, or with a specific employer, before making any kind of long-term commitment.

Tips for Interviewers

Tips for Interviewers

Understanding the ins and outs of a solid interview is a vital human resources skill when it comes to hiring most qualified job candidates. Good interviewing skills also make a better candidate experience – giving them a better feeling about the open position and your company culture. Perfecting your interview skills will help assure you find the perfect fit for the position you are filling.

Have an Outlined Interview Structure

There’s an art to handling interviews, but there’s also a bit of science too – starting with planning and structuring the experience.

  • Be sure to do your homework review the applicants resume and LinkedIn profile. Underline areas of interest and make notes in the margin.
  • Before you get started, it’s a good idea to make your candidates aware of your interview agenda. This can help them focus on your expectations as well as your timeframe.
  • Start by giving an overview of your company, workplace culture and the specific job duties. Then, begin with your list of job-related questions.
  • Next, give your candidate a chance to ask questions. Be prepared to take some notes.

Ask Questions based on Job Tasks

Create a list of questions that relate to job responsibilities with the open position.

Here are a few general questions to get you started:

Why did you decide to work in this industry?
Why did you decide to apply for this job specifically?
What do you like most about your current position?
Why are you leaving your current job?
Tell me about a recent job role you had that is similar to this position.
What were your daily job responsibilities?
What specific experience do you have that is directly related to this position?

Behavioral questions are a great way to learn about candidate’s potential to fit for your open position. Ask for specific examples of past performance and behavior in their current and previous roles.

Here are a few examples:

Tell me about a project you successfully completed.
Tell me about a challenge or conflict you had and how you handled it.

Silence and Non-verbal Cues are Key

Subtle non-verbal like voice tone, pitch and even long pauses or quick responses can reveal a lot about a candidate. In fact, Nonverbal cues can sometimes be even more important than what they say.

Pay attention to the following:

  • Is their voice tone too loud or too soft?
  • Is the pitch of their voice unusually high (possibly nervous)?
  • Is there enthusiasm in their voice?
  • Do they cut you off when you’re speaking?

What kind of non-verbal cues do you notice when you ask difficult questions?

  • Do they take too long to answer?
  • Do they take long enough to be thoughtful and reflective?
  • Do they stammer and go off on tangents?
