Why Being Independent is Important

Friday Services is deeply rooted in the community of businesses and employees we serve. Like them, we call Western North Carolina home. Our decisions are centered around what is important to our clients – who we know well because they are also our regional neighbors.

History of Friday Services

The company had its origin in 1980, when Debbie Wilson, a service-minded woman in Hendersonville, North Carolina, started a secretarial business for local clients; typing letters and reports, and offering general office support. People found the services to be exactly the type of help they needed. Clients asked Debbie if the services could be provided at their business location – thus the beginning of “Girl Friday Services.”

In the mid-eighties, some temporary Rockwell engineers approached Debbie and informed her they were not keen on working for a company with this name. Debbie then changed the name to “Friday Temporary Services.”

The business grew, as did Debbie’s two small children. In August 1987, she decided to sell the business to devote more time to her family.

Diane and John Modaff

Diane and John Modaff moved from Illinois to Western North Carolina in 1985. John worked for twenty-five years as a commercial banking executive while Diane enjoyed working as a temporary office employee for the Arthur Anderson Company. They wanted to try their hands at something new together, with their backgrounds both firmly rooted in similar fields; dedicated to helping people. The opportunity to purchase a local staffing company presented itself and they jumped at the chance.

John changed the name of the company to Friday Staffing Services aka Friday Services.

Company Milestones

  • In 1980, the company was founded by Debbie Wilson
  • In 1987, Diane and John purchased the business, it had a single office in Hendersonville and three in-house employees.
  • In 1988 the company opened an additional office in Asheville.
  • In 1993 a third office was opened in Morganton.

Friday Services expanded into the technical and professional industries, Friday Services purchased two businesses: Rent-an-Exec in 1990, which turned into Friday Technical Services, and Tri-County Personnel Service in 1991, which became Friday Professional Services. These both fell under Friday’s Professional Division.

Friday Services has been and still is a privately-held North Carolina corporation. The company operates as an independent business and is not affiliated with any franchise organizations. All of the company’s business functions; sales, service, and administration, are managed and processed by the company’s staff members. External experts or consultants are engaged as needed.

Over the years advancements have been made within the company to streamline processes to better the efficiency for everyone involved. The company’s original paper record system has advanced to a state-of-the-art communications network. All locations are networked for instant sharing of information concerning job candidates’ availability, employee status, and client job orders. Employees, clients, and the public can communicate with the company via in-person, phone, email, and the company’s website,, which is updated daily.

Dave Modaff, son of Diane and John Modaff, holds the position of Chief Executive Officer. Dave joined the company in 2000. He and his sister, Lynda Modaff, are now the owners of Friday’s.

Deborah Pressley was the Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and oversaw the day-to-day operations of all divisions of the company. Staffing Services or Professional? Friday does both. Here’s the difference
