You may need to have specialized training, educational achievements, and relevant job experience on your resume to attract serious attention from employers when applying for office support staff positions in the healthcare industry. We recently talked about some of the many medical office job titles that are available in Western North Carolina today. This blog offers you tips we’ve compiled on how to get the education and experience you will need to get a job in a medical office in today’s job market.
Medical Office Skills Training and Educational Programs
To qualify for an entry level position in a medical office, you will need to have earned a high school diploma or GED at minimum. Earning additional certifications or diplomas will help you become eligible for more, and often higher paying, employment opportunities. Several community colleges here in Western North Carolina offer workforce training courses and educational programs can help you learn the skills and earn the credentials you may need to get hired as a medical office professional.
The Medical Office Administration program from AB Tech includes classes in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical coding, billing, and insurance. They offer an associate’s degree program as well as a diploma program in Medical Office Administration. AB Tech also offers a Medical Coding certificate program and a diploma program in Medical Transcription.

Office Job Experience
Work experience can be just as important as educational achievements when applying for some positions. If you are new to the field and looking to get your foot in the door, registering with a staffing agency can be an excellent way of getting job experience in a medical office.
Health care practices sometimes need temporary workers to fill in when they have a staff member go on vacation, maternity leave, or other long period of absence. Check Friday Services’s Job Board regularly to see currently available positions in medical offices. As you earn more work experience, your resume will become more attractive to employers. For example, the experience you gain by succeeding in a Receptionist or General Office Support job may eventually help you work your way up to an Administrative Assistant position.
Clerical and customer service experience in other types of work environments can also help you qualify for medical office jobs. Communications skills and customer service skills are often just as important as clerical skills. Previous job experience that demonstrates you have these abilities may help you qualify for an entry level position. For example, call center or data entry experience may be very helpful when applying to Scheduler, Receptionist, or Collections positions offered by medical offices or hospitals.
Also, language skills can be very helpful. Bilingual candidates may be in higher demand so if you speak a second language, be sure to include that on your resume. Many medical offices in Western North Carolina are looking for job applicants who speak English as well as Spanish or Ukrainian.
