5 Ways to Spring Into a New Job

Mar 24, 2016

Are you looking for a new job or a career change this spring? Now that the temperature is warming the job market here in Western North Carolina is heating up too! If you are looking for new job opportunities, Friday Services is here to offer you a few great tips you can use to spring into a new position:

1. Update your resume–again.

Annual spring cleaning is a good idea for resumes too! Take a fresh look at your resume and remove anything that is outdated or is not relevant to the type of job you are seeking. If you are hoping to land an office job as a Receptionist or Secretary, you do not need a resume that lists the job you had as a clown at children’s birthday parties that one summer after high school. Have a good friend take a look at your resume and ask them to make suggestions for improvements. If you are writing a whole new resume, read Friday Services’s own guide: Resume Writing Tips.

2. Make a current list of your skills, talents, and accomplishments relevant to the job you want.

Think hard about your goals and your past work experience. What talents, skills, and abilities do you have that will help you get the new job you want? Can you translate the skills you learned in one job to apply to the new career you want to build? If you have job experience as a car mechanic and are now looking for a job in manufacturing as a Machine Operator, make a list of all of the skills you learned in your old job that apply to the new one. Even if you don’t have a resume, you should be able to list those out on a job application and be prepared to explain those to a recruiter or hiring manager in an interview.

3. Get additional training.

Research your chosen career path and find out what you can be doing to make yourself more attractive as a candidate. Take a look at all the available job postings and look for requirements for the position. Make a list of all certifications, skills, experiences they are looking for in a candidate. For example, if you are interested in getting a Material Handler job it might be a very good idea to get certified training in forklift operation.

Research professional development opportunities and make a plan. AB Tech, Blue Ridge Community College, Haywood Community College, and other local schools offer workforce and career development training that will help you learn the skills and earn the credentials you will need to succeed in many careers that require credentials or licensure.

4. Put your best face forward online.

While, we’re talking about spring cleaning–think about tidying up your social media presence as well. More and more employers are looking at social media accounts of the people they are considering hiring. Do you present a professional image online? It can be a good idea to Google your own name. If anything comes up that you think might give a bad impression to a potential employer, you may have to act to have it taken down.
