DIRECTOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH AND SAFETY

 

POSITION SUMMARY

This position will lead the development and deployment of a corporate-wide safety first and 5S culture. The Director of EHS will lead, direct, and manage all EHS, Training, and 5S initiatives for the corporation.  The Director of EHS will  be a strategic partner with the VP of Manufacturing, Corporate Operations Excellence Manager, and individual site Leadership teams to establish a culture which drives safety, training, and 5S initiatives in line with corporate  objectives.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

EHS

  • Develop, implement, and monitor, but not limited to, the following training: new employee orientation, employees transferring internally, mandated annual and refresher OSHA and MSHA training.

  • Development, implementation, and monitoring of site inspections and corrective action programs. Must coordinate team efforts to solve problems and implement required actions. Must maintain appropriate administrative documentation for these programs.

  • Develop and lead accident investigations per corporate protocols.  Measure, track, and take action on any identifiable trends as a result. 

  • Provide direction and leadership within the corporate safety structure. 

  • Manage appropriate statistical information regarding safety for the corporation and for appropriate governmental agencies (OSHA, MSHA, DMME)

  • Write policies that achieve governing agency compliance that are applicable to the diverse operations of the company

  • Develop and maintain programs to maintain hygiene, noise, ventilation, etc. and recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.

  • Monitor compliance with the Workers Compensation Act and Regulations as well as ensuring proper and timely reporting of injuries and follow all claims to completion. Keep abreast of changes to all

    applicable health and safety laws and regulations and counsel management on the direction of future health and safety legislation.  Manage the claims management program including the modified work program.

     

Training

  • Design meaningful employee training programs that align with company goals, industry standards, and employee skill sets.

  • Select and manage resources, including working with both internal employees and training vendors to develop impactful training programs.

  • Stay abreast of training trends, developments, and best practices.

  • Flexible and creative approach to executing training in a fast-paced environment with potential competing time and schedule constraints.

  • Using key metrics, evaluate and monitor organizational performance to ensure that training is meeting organizational needs.

  • Work as a Change Agent to drive cultural change in all training activities from New Hire forward.

  • Develop monthly Management Reporting on Training Plans/Execution, training metrics, program implementation, projects etc.

  • Identify, schedule, and assess the training needs of the organization, including the anticipation of various training needs as the organization continues to grow and evolve.

  • Develop individualized and group training programs that address specific organizational needs.

  • Implement effective and purposeful training methods.

  • Assess employee’s skills, performance, and productivity to identify areas of improvement with all tools, systems, current metrics, checklists etc.

 

 

5S

  • Develop and implement a best-in-class Corporate 5S strategy that drives a sustainable culture of orderliness and cleanliness to align with organization objectives.

  • Directly facilitate and participate in ongoing process improvements through the use of critical 5S initiatives.

  • Partner with the site operations team to develop effective training tools and resources specific to continuous improvement and 5S initiatives.

  • Establish metrics and auditing structure to monitor 5S improvements.

  • Partner with the Operational Excellence team to support continuous improvement activities (SPL, Kaizen, A3 ) in site locations.

  • Drive and facilitate Six Sigma methodologies.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Business, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering preferred.

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.

  • 5+ years in combination of direct experience in all aspects EHS programs in heavy industrial and mining sites. 

  • Experience with 5S tools, techniques, and principles.

  • Ability to motivate teams and lead change at all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.

  • Leadership ability: strong communicator, decision-maker, collaborator, ability to influence without hierarchical authority.

  • Strong problem solving/analytical skills to investigate and formulate recommendations and action plans. 

  • Demonstrated process improvement experience. Solid computer skills (MS Office). 

  • High integrity and confidentiality is a must.
